Chelsea fans won’t forget the beating their side received at Old Trafford in the first round of the current season. United ran out 4-0 winners and dark clouds were already looming over Fran Lampard’s youth project. However, now they are fourth in the table and their opponents start the weekend in eighth place, six points behind Chelsea.
The Londoners are in the final Champions League place but only two points clear of Sheffield United, with a game in hand, though. This one. It’s the start of a busy few weeks for both sides with matches in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League. The Londoners aren’t the most consistent of teams at present, then again neither are United. Chelsea has only won one of their last five league games, three endings in score draws. You never quite know what is going to happen in a Chelsea home game. The last six have produced two wins, three defeats and a draw.
Manchester United fans also struggle to work out what their team is going to do next. One thing is for sure and that is they can’t afford to lose this match. Going nine points behind Chelsea is going to make qualification for the Champions League practically impossible. United was as high as fifth but have won just one of their last five league matches, failing to score in the last three. They have also lost three of their last four away league matches, only scoring in one of them. That’s not quite the form of a side wanting to finish in the top four.
United have beaten Chelsea twice this season (they also won away in the EFL Cup) but in their current form, a win here looks difficult. The away team may be struggling for goals, but they don’t come up against the Chelsea defence every week. Is goals on the cards at Stamford Bridge?
Neither side are in the best of form and neither are consistent currently so what do we make of this match? Chelsea has already lost twice to United this season and have dodgy home form. United need to improve their scoring rate and up against Chelsea’s defence might just do that.
Chelsea has a mediocre home record with five wins this season, all coming against sides placed 10th or lower. The visitors recently kept both Wolves and City to nil on their travels and have twice beaten Manchester City away this season. Go for a high-priced away win or take the double chance on United to gain points here.
