Toluca welcomes Atlas this evening in the Liga MX in Mexico with both sides struggling for form at the moment. Toluca had reasonably high expectations to this season which they are currently far from meeting. The league table has them down in 15th with only three sides below them. The first opening matches have brought only two wins in nine.
Just about the only thing really going for them before this encounter is that Atlas is in an even worse state. Despite the poor start to the season Toluca is still only trailing the playoffs by four points. A run of form could really change the dynamic of their season in a short while. As such, picking up a win on Sunday is of paramount importance. Having two wins in their last three home games certainly helps confidence.
As things stand currently Atlas should praise themselves fortunate there is no relegation from Liga MX this term. They finished the Apertura season in 14th place and given that, Monterrey is currently the only side keeping Atlas off the bottom of the table, they don’t look like doing any better this time around. Form table sees them rock bottom with five defeats in six.
Naturally, Atlas could really do with picking up a result in Sunday’s trip. With confidence low, they don’t seem at all likely to secure one. They lost their last four visits to Toluca, the most recent defeat coming in January in the Copa MX. They produced just three goals in their last five matches.
Ultimately, there can only be one-sidedly considered as favourites in this weekend’s clash and that’s Toluca. Player for player, they are a stronger outfit than Atlas. Although they are not flying high, they are in nowhere near as poor shape as the visitors. All things considered, backing a home win looks the best way to play as far as the betting is concerned.
At least one goal was scored before half time in Atlas’ previous eight matches which also makes a punt worthwhile. Toluca has scored an average of 2.62 goals a game over their last eight home matches. We do not picture them having trouble in putting a couple past Atlas.
