The FA Cup goes into round 5 Monday night when Arsenal take a trip to the Southcoast to play Portsmouth from League 1. Arsenal’s defeat at home to Olympiacos left a huge dent in their chances of winning silverware this season. When they travel Portsmouth, they know they can’t afford to bottle this.
Going to the fifth round of the cup, Portsmouth is fifth in League One with 56 points while Arsenal’s struggles in the season see them placed ninth in the Premier League with 37 points. Portsmouth goes to this game on the back of a 3-1 win over MK Dons, who had a man sent off before Portsmouth sealed the game with the third goal. They have won three of their last four matches but facing a hurting Arsenal will naturally be a different game altogether.
They have scored two or more in three of their last four matches. One of their best highlights this season is a 19-match unbeaten run at home. They have won 16 of the 19 and will be looking to fell a giant here, having already eliminated Championship side Barnsley. They have four straight wins in the FA Cup in which they scored at the least twice each time.
Gunners going for a win
Arsenal has three wins in its last four. Considering the kind of opposition, they have faced, a match against Pompey looks like an easy win on paper. The Gunners have been tough to predict this season though. Arsenal has not lost in 10 straight away matches, but seven of those were draws. They have three clean sheets in 10, while they have nine wins in 11 FA Cup matches.
They have lost just once in the last 13 away matches in the FA Cup. It is over a decade ago since these two sides faced off the last time. Arsenal is unbeaten in their last 18 matches against Portsmouth. Coming from a disappointing showing resulting in an exit from the Europa League, Arsenal knows the cup provides their only chance of silverware this season.
Their opponent boasts an amazing home record and Arsenal will need to be at their best. That being said, Arsenal has made massive strides in the FA Cup as well. This being the best chance of winning anything this season, we expect Mikel Arteta’s charges to give their all. Considering both sides’ scoring forms, a bet on at least 3 goals looks worth a punt.
