Nimes take of Olympique Marseille in a Friday night Ligue 1 clash between two sides looking to avenge themselves. After a seriously good run of Marseille were heavy favourites in their home match against Nantes last week. The visitors managed to stun the 2nd placed l’OM with a 3-1 win. It was Marseille’s first defeat in the league since October and 2nd place still look safe and sound.
Their performances on the road have been very good with the best away record after PSG. They have lost just one of their last ten away games in all competitions. 10 matches which have brought seven wins and six clean sheets. Marseille have been slightly tame going forward lately with just seven goals in their last five.
Question is whether they can rediscover their sharpness against the team currently sitting third from bottom in Ligue 1. Marseille won the last two meetings between these sides, both ending 3-1 with the most recent fixture happening in December. They lost their last visit to Stade des Costières though.
Nîmes suffered their first defeat in five matches last week as they narrowly went down 2-1 to 3rd placed Rennes. It was an unfortunate loss for the Crocodiles as they played forty minutes with ten men away from home. They held out for so long but in the end, surrendered to an 89th-minute winner. Prior to that defeat, they looked like a side about to claw their way into safety. It has been a tough season with times spent below the relegation line.
Four wins on the spin have seen them move all square on points with Dijon. They won their last three at home and four of the last five only losing to Rennes (yes, them again!). Even with 10 men, they were a serious match to top three side Rennes last week and as mentioned they have also beaten Monaco recently. We think they could give Marseille a serious scare here.
The visitors have conceded five in their last three matches and with Nantes giving them the run-around last week, we’re backing this Nîmes side to the net. The last three encounters between the sides offered are, four and four goals and we feel this could be an entertaining match as well. Also, we won’t rule out a surprise win for the home side.
