Olympique Marseille look to avenge themselves when they take on Amiens at the Orange Velodrome Friday night. Marseille somewhat surprisingly lost the reverse match back in October, the form of the two clubs have since gone separate ways. Even more surprisingly Marseille lost their last home match when Nantes went away 3-1 winners.
Marseille is going for the kill
Marseille gave the perfect answer though last Friday as they beat Nîmes 3-2 in a south coast derby. André Villas-Boas’ men faced an in-form Nîmes side with four wins in their previous five games. It smelled of trouble when Nimes took the lead, but L’OM rode the storm, eventually taking all three points despite a late charge from the opposition.
The home side currently sits eight points clear of Rennes in second place and look comfortably on their way to Champions League qualification. They have managed to build on their results from last year. As 2020 so far brought out eight wins in twelve games. At home, they have been particularly impressed with their recent defeat to Nantes ending a run of twelve unbeaten games at the Vélodrome.
Nine of these 12 were wins and, Marseille should be confident of getting back on track in front of their always strong home support. They could do with a bit more focus in defence though. As they have kept just two clean sheets in their last nine home matches.
Last chance for Amiens
Amiens had a massive chance last week to claim three points over relegation rivals Metz. Ultimately, they spurned the opportunity, losing 1-0 to les Grenats. It really was a match they could hardly afford to lose as they now sit five points adrift of Nîmes. The latter is currently in the play off-spot. They are now on a run of twelve games without a win in all competitions with their last league success coming in November.
They have played eleven games since the start of 2020 and they don’t just lose all the time. It is just that they simply don’t win. Six defeats are not catastrophic but backed up by five draws the outcome is not good enough. We find it hard to build a case on behalf of Amiens, and convincing defeats away to sides like PSG, Rennes and Monaco. Promises a convincing win in what could be a high scoring match.
