Quick history

To understand how the Scottish Premiership or the Ladbrokes Premiership came to be, we first need to explain a couple of things. So please bear with us, and it all will be crystal clear when we are all done. First, we have the Scottish Premier League (SPL) that dates back to 1998 which used to be the number 1 competition. This after it broke free from the Scottish Football League (SFL). With us so far? Well, this separation only endured to 2013 when SPL and SFL decided to pool their resources and form the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). As such, since its merge, the Scottish Premiership considers being the top of Scottish football. And that’s about as brief we can get to explain the history of the top segment of football in Scotland.

How many teams include in the Scottish Premiership?

The highest division of Scottish football may differ a bit from what you might use to see. And should we compare it against the Premier League when 20 teams include at any given time? The number of teams drops considerably. In fact, only 12 teams are competing in a type of round-robin system. Though, as the number of teams is much lower, the teams get pinned against each other 3 times for a total of 33 games. However, it’s quite straight forward as we will explain in the section how a season builds and how it plays out.

A season of Scottish Premiership

So, how is a season of the Scottish Premiership structured? Basically, every team is playing each other 3 times in the initial phase. Then, after the 33 games are all done the League splits into 2 segments with 6 teams each, the top 6 and the bottom 6. Where the 2 division of 6 teams play each other once. And, this is where the League is balancing out the number of home versus away matches. Although, a perfect balance of twice away and twice at home matches is not always reached. Then, after the second split up comes to a completion, all teams have played 38 games. All this happen in a season stretching from August to May. When all points earned takes into consideration, and a team awards the win. While the bottom team replaces the winner of the Scottish Championship.scottish premiership

Who owns the League?

In the end, the owner of the Scottish Premiership can tribute to sponsors keeping the football League alive. But also, the people showing up should get taken into consideration. In the end, there would be no League to watch if the interest was not there. In fact, did you know that Scotland was the host of the first international association football match on November 30th 1872 at Hamilton Crescent’s West of Scotland cricket ground? Showing that Scotland also has football close at heart. Although, it can also get said that the true owner is the overall winner of the Scottish Premiership.

Scottish Premiership competition champions

For anyone following the Scottish Premiership, there it’s no secret who the only champion is. That’s right; there has only been one winner of the League since its modern birth in 2013. And that team is Celtic, with 6 back to back wins (2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19). However, almost the same can get said for the runner-up Aberdeen. That placed second no more than 4 times (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18).

Extraordinary moments in Scottish Premiership

Do we have some fantastic moments to share with you, and to no surprise, Celtic is contributing to many but not all. So let’s kick things off with the Celtic and the 2016/17 season when they lifted the trophy with 106 points. Yet the moment that really cements 2016/17 season in a firm place. Is that Celtic played the whole season without defeat. Or how about when Hibernian and the Rangers tied a match in season 2017/18 with 5-5. Making it one of the most goal rich matches in the League’s history.

Top goal scorers and record keepers in Scottish Premiership

Finding its way to the first place we have Leigh Griffiths and its 77 goals. That he has produced for Celtic since 2014 and still does. Then, coming in on second place we have Adam Rooney that played for Aberdeen between 2014 to 2018. During his time in Aberdeen, he managed to produce 66 goals. The third and final record holder is Kris Boyd scoring 55 goals for his Kilmarnock during seasons 2013/14 and 2015 to 2019.

Live viewership and the home audience

First of all, due to its slightly lower number of competing teams, if we make a direct comparison with other Leagues in the UK. It’s obvious that the number of total fans is lower. However, it has to get said as well; the teams playing doesn’t have the same stadium capacity. Where the average seating space comes in at around 20,000. With Celtic leading the pack with 60,000 available tickets to sell. While the lower teams hover around 6,000 to 8,000. But, in this case, the Scottish Premiership leans heavily on remote viewers, like sportsbook streamers and pay per view type of deals.

Can you place bets on Scottish Premiership?

To find odds on this League is by no means hard. In fact, you will see a good selection of markets and different odds to place a bet or two on. Worth to keep in mind, usually to find bets on this League you need to drill down the search.
