The city of Istanbul is rocking this Sunday with Galatasaray taking on arch-rivals Besiktas in the last match of the day. The encounter follows a match between number one and two in the table, Istanbul and Trabzonspor. A fantastic day for the people scheduling the Süper Lig.
Galatasaray came into this season hoping to reclaim the title they won in May. They might still do that, but it has not been an easy ride so far. They are currently in 3rd trailing Trabzonspor and İstanbul Başakşehir by three points. Knowing the result of the match between those two before going into this game, Galatasaray will know they have an opportunity to make up ground.
Having won six straight home matches whilst scoring an average of 3.42 goals a game form is impressive. It is only three weeks ago they managed the almost unthinkable of winning away against Fenerbahce. A major boost to the confidence and those taking to the pitch will be itching to get the job done in another derby.
Meanwhile, after finishing 3rd last season, Besiktas were also hoping to be a part of the title race. Hopes are quickly fading though with the visitors currently occupying 5th spot trailing the leaders by nine. Securing a European place seems a more realistic objective.
No doubt Besiktas are underdogs here, given their rather terrible away record. The match will be played behind closed doors in a slight boost to their chances. Still, it is the enemy’s territory and they have lost six of their last eight away games. They conceded an average of 2.12 goals a game in the process.
Ultimately, this is a very important game for the hosts and it’s hard to see them dropping points here. With or without home support they are the better side. Galatasaray have dropped just two points over their last nine league fixtures. With Besiktas weak on the road and not quite meeting expectations this campaign, Galatasaray should go for the throat. Backing a home win looks by far the best punt here.
