We are heading for the Nicaraguan Primera Division tonight where the Clausura season has reached its playoff stage. This play-off encounter kicks off at 03.00 Thursday night with Walter Ferretti taking on Municipal Jalapa at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol.
The playoff stage is to be played out as two matches between the sides which finished the season in third, fourth, fifth and sixth place. These two matches are only staged over one leg with the highest placed team enjoying the home advantage.
Walter Ferretti took a while to get going this season as the first five rounds brought only one win. They checked in with three wins on the trot in March, only to lose three on the bounce afterwards. Entering April, they hit a rich vein which brought four wins in a row. It meant they were in with a slight chance of finishing second before the final round of the regular season.
Will they overcome Muncipal Jalapa
They stumbled at the last hurdle though meaning they will now have to overcome Municipal Jalapa to qualify for the semifinal. The best team in the regular season was by far Managua. They are also the only side placed better in the current form table than Walter Ferretti. They are also the only team in the league who scored more goals than Walter Ferretti.
23 of their 31 goals were scored at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol. Walter Ferretti finished the regular season by winning their last four home matches to nil. In other words, their form looks great at the moment, while the opposite is the case for Municipal Jalapa. They finished the season with no wins in their last five matches scoring just two goals along the way. Including cup matches, they have played 11 home matches in 2020 winning only once while losing six times.
Just like it was the case with the first playoff match of the night, it is difficult to build a case of behalf of the away side. There is one thing though. Municipal Jalapa has managed a draw the last two times they went to play Walter Ferretti. A goalless encounter in October and a 2-2 draw in January. However, with the current home side in such a good form we still find it hard to go against them tonight.
