For the fourth time this season already Manchester plays host to a derby between the red and the sky-blue part of the Metropole. Surprisingly it is United who is looking for a third win. They begin the weekend in fifth place, two behind Chelsea in fourth and level with Wolves in 6th. The battle for the Champions League is really heating up.
Both clubs could win a hatful of trophies between them this season. United are still battling to win the FA Cup and Europa League, while City already has the EFL Cup. They are now chasing the FA Cup and Champions League. While a trophy is never out of place, the home side’s main aim this season is to earn a place in the 2020/21 Champions League.
They are unbeaten in nine league and cup games, with their last defeat coming against Burnley in January. That home loss is the only one they have suffered at Old Trafford in the Premier League in their last 12 games. United’s decision to buy Bruno Fernandes in the January transfer window has paid dividends. Fans of the Red Army have a new hero.
Manchester United Form
City comes into this game having lost twice to United, both on home soil oddly enough. They have a much better record at Old Trafford though with three straight league wins and no loss since 2015. City is second in the table but even with Liverpool’s form slipping of late, they have little or no chance of climbing any higher.
Winning trophies is the aim for the rest of the season, particularly the Champions League. They are in good form coming into this game with five wins in a row in all competitions. City has won nine away league games this season. Manchester United can’t afford many more mistakes if they want a top-four finish. They have had some good results against City this season but just seem to struggle when playing them at Old Trafford.
Manchester City has stabilized their defence and a tight match could be on the cards. When they last visited Old Trafford, they absolutely hammered United. When they set their minds to it, they are capable of it again. They might like to prove a point to themselves before their next Champions League match is coming up and we are backing the away win.
