The final two rounds of the Clausura season in the Nicaraguan Primera Division are coming up this week. Thursday night Real Madriz plays catch up to Chinandega when welcoming the latter at the Estadio Solidaridad Augusto Cesar Mendoza. Be honest: have you ever heard a more impressive name for a home ground!
Six teams go into the playoffs while four get left out. Both Real Madriz and Chinandega got left out in the Apertura season in the fall. The former finished 9th while Chinandega ended up one point outside the playoff zone in 7th. They find themselves close to the exact same positions now with two rounds remaining. In fact, Chinandega lies 7th with two points to the 6th spot, while Real Madriz is four points behind.
It means of course that the visitors have the most at stake here, but do they boast a form which can assure them points here? Hardly. After opening the year with a win, they go into this with just two wins in their previous 8 matches. They lost their last two matches 3-0 and 3-1 which perhaps has their morale pretty low.
However, their last four defeats came against the sides in the top four against whom almost everyone in this league loses. They started April by winning two matches, 4-0 and 1-0 respective, against the sides currently placed 5th and 6th. Can they rediscover that kind of form a win is certainly not out of the question in Somoto.
The home side is hardly doing any better as their position in the table also indicates. They have taken one point from the last 12. They have not managed a single goal in their last 275 minutes of playing time. Three of those four matches were played away from home though and they do save their best for the Estadio Solidaridad Augusto Cesar Mendoza. Love that name!
They suffered three defeats here so far in 2020 losing to three of the sides occupying top four. As mentioned above, most teams in this division lose against those sides, be it home or away. They did not concede a single goal in their last three at home, taking seven points on the way. Their most recent match saw them keeping the best side in the division, Managua to a goalless draw. Their last five home matches offered a total of four goals which has us aiming for a goal low scoring match here.
