Friday night in the Bundesliga the league leaders welcome the side placed rock-bottom is what looks to be a one-sided encounter. Bayern have been enjoying a particularly impressive run of form in recent weeks and defensively they have been far more impressive after replacing Nico Kovac with Hansi Flick as head coach.
Bayern is currently undefeated in each of their last eight Bundesliga games. They claimed 22 of the last 24 points with only RB Leipzig managing a draw. To paint the picture further; they have earned at least two more wins than any other Bundesliga side over the past eight rounds.
It is not that Paderborn is a particularly poor side. They simply lack the quality in small areas of their game to fully make the grade in the Bundesliga. Or so it seems current. As head coach Steffen Baumgart stated last week: “We were certainly not the worst team on the pitch”. But his side still managed to lose against Hertha Berlin.
After conceding in almost every game under Nico Kovac, Bayern Munich suddenly boasts the joint-best defence this season in the Bundesliga. Only Borussia Monchengladbach conceded as few goals as Bayern this season. They conceded just nine goals in their 11 Bundesliga home games, winning the last three without conceding. In addition to having the Bundesliga’s best defensive record, Bayern also currently have the second-best goalscoring record. The league leaders have scored an impressive 62 goals in their 22 Bundesliga games this season.
Bayern scored at least three goals in six of their last eight Bundesliga fixtures. Paderborn conceded at least two goals in 14 of their 22 Bundesliga fixtures this season. The visitors have also conceded at least three goals in each of their last five meetings with Bayern Munich. Speaking of Borussia Monchengladbach, they managed to beat Paderborn at home without conceding. A home win looks an absolute certainty. Take the home side to win to nil or bet on both sides not to score as we have done.
Bayern conceded only four goals over the course of their last eight Bundesliga matches. To put that into perspective it is at least five goals fewer than any other side in the Bundesliga conceded in that time. Bayern’s impressive defensive record doesn’t bode well for a Paderborn side who have currently got the joint-worst Bundesliga away goalscoring record this season.
